Mustangs Held Scoreless by Long Beach State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Long Beach women's soccer team held a 2-0 lead at the half and added four more goals in the final period to defeat the Mustangs 6-0 in a Big West Conference soccer game on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. With the loss Cal Poly falls to 7-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while LBSU improves to 9-3-1 and 2-0 in Big West games.

The Mustangs will return to the field on Oct. 7^th when the team travels to Cal State Northridge for a Big West game at 7 pm.

Long Beach got on the board in the 12^th minute of play when Nicole Sweetman knocked in an uncontested ball off a rebound of a shot by Shawna Gordon the Cal Poly goalie, Brooke Gauvin, deflected. Gordon's shot was set up by a pass from Nadia Link.

In the 31^st minute the 49ers scored their second goal when Gordon scored her sixth goal of the season from 12 yards out on the left side.

In the second period Link scored in the 65^th minute followed by a second goal by Grodon in the 76^th minute.

Long Beach State added two late goals in the closing minutes of play when Marysol Rosas scored two goals.

Overall Long Beach outshot the Mustangs 19-9 with 14 shots on goal while the Mustangs had five on goal.

Tiffany Gummow took four of the Mustangs' nine shots with two coming on goal. Afton Thulin, Cristina Farrington and Kacey Held each had one shot on goal.

Cal Poly was whistled for 16 fouls compared to 10 for LBSU. The 49ers also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Kaitlyn Gustaves earned the win for the 49ers in goal with five saves while Gauvin took the loss with seven saves.

The game saw three yellow cards, two issued to Long Beach State (Sweetman and Taylor Nelson) and one to Cal Poly (Farrington).
