SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior midfielder Jake Hustedt registered his first goal of the 2010 campaign on Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program saw an unbeaten run of eight-straight regular season games at Alex G. Spanos Stadium snapped with a 4-1 defeat versus Loyola Marymount.
Cal Poly (2-3-1), which witnessed Loyola Marymount (4-3-1) place 11 of its 18 shots on target, conceded first-half goals for the first time this year after strikes from junior forwards Jonas Reiter (11th minute) and Phil Da Silva (35th) allowed the Lions to lead wire-to-wire. Junior forward Artur Jozkowicz added the first of his two goals two minutes after the restart for Loyola Marymount, which handed Cal Poly its first three-goal home loss in 30 matches at Spanos Stadium.
"Those two goals really did deflate us a bit because I thought we had played well during the first part of the game," fifth-year Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said.
The Mustangs, outshot by Loyola Marymount during the opening half, 10-3, found some offensive rhythm early in the second half. Junior midfielder Wes Feighner, who totaled two of Cal Poly's four shots on target, had his sliding attempt stopped by Lions junior goalkeeper Jack McCormack in the 48th minute. Less than three minutes later, freshman forward Justin Hill slammed an attempt off the Loyola Marymount crossbar.
Cal Poly finally broke through in the 58th minute, as Hill found a streaking Hustedt (above) with a rolling pass from the top of the penalty area. Hustedt, cutting in from the right, fired his shot into the lower left corner of the Loyola Marymount goal.
Hill, who collected his first collegiate point with the assist, added two of Cal Poly's final three shot attempts during the last 33 minutes of action.
Jozkowicz closed the scoring in the 65th.
"We were really trying to pressure them and create more opportunities and Jake's goal lifted us, but then we gave up another goal," Holocher added. "Overall, it was a disappointing evening for us. We'll need to regroup and learn from this because we're heading into the heart of our season."
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Brett Finkelstein recorded six saves in his season debut.
With the victory, Loyola Marymount became the first opposing team to score four goals at Spanos Stadium since Portland edged Cal Poly on Nov. 16, 2007, 4-3.
Cal Poly, which fell to 21-5-4 at Spanos Stadium, completes its three-match homestand and ends the non-conference portion of its schedule against Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
