SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior forward David Zamora's 10th-minute goal helped him become the Cal Poly men's soccer program's all-time points leader while senior midfielder Junior Burgos' first-half strike ensured a 2-1 victory for the Mustangs in a rain-soaked match on Sunday afternoon at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Patrick McLain registered four saves for Cal Poly (5-5-3, 2-2-2), which returned from a season-long eight-day hiatus to snap a four-match winless streak with Sunday's victory. The win also bumped Cal Poly's point total to eight, one behind joint third-place programs UC Davis (5-10-0, 3-4-0) and Cal State Fullerton (3-4-0, 5-8-2).
With less than 10 minutes gone, Burgos whipped a cross left of goal and from outside the UC Davis penalty area toward a streaking Zamora (above). The Costa Rica native lined the ball off his head and past Aggies goalkeeper Omar Zeenni near the left post to bring his career point total to 58, one ahead of former record holder Clay Harty (1995-96). Zamora, already Cal Poly's career leader with 74 appearances, now needs just three goals to match Harty's program record of 26.
Two minutes after he had the first of his match-high five shot attempts blocked by an Aggie defender, Burgos notched his first goal of the season in the 21st, corralling a pass from junior midfielder Wes Feighner and swerving a shot into the top right corner of the Aggie net. Burgos, who finished with four goals in 2009, became the ninth Mustang to score this season.
"David and Junior are both good players and have been very valuable to us even though they haven't scored the amount of goals they have in the past," fifth-year Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. "Today was a great example of the quality they both possess."
Burgos placed three additional attempts on frame during the second half and the Mustangs – whistled offside five times – nearly put a third past UC Davis before junior center back Patrick Sigler's sliding attempt in the 70th was stopped by Zeenni.
UC Davis eventually pulled a goal back in the 80th, as freshman forward Kevin Schulte streaked behind the Mustang defense before latching onto a pass from freshman midfielder Alex Henry and besting McLain.
Cal Poly, 23-5-6 at Spanos Stadium since 2007, completes a three-match homestand on Wednesday, Oct. 27 against UC Santa Barbara at 8 p.m. The match will be televised nationally on Fox Soccer Channel.
"I know we're a good team and that we can produce goals and keep clean sheets," added Holocher, whose Mustangs are unbeaten in five of their last seven matches. "Now it's a matter of playing with confidence, consistency and mental sharpness."
