Hugh Bream

Over a 23-year coaching career, Hugh Bream compiled a 377-182 dual match record for a .674 winning percentage. Eighteen of those years were with Cal Poly.
He was 156-55 with the Mustang men’s program, 133-89 with the women’s team and also coached at San Diego State from 1989-93. He guided the Mustangs to an NCAA Division II men's team championship in 1986 and coached numerous All-Americans and All-Big West performers over his tenure, including 1986 national Division II doubles champions Bob Zoller and Paul Landry.
Bream, who had a court named in his honor at Cal Poly in 2018, was a five-time ITA Regional Collegiate Coach of the Year. During his time as coach of the USA Junior Davis Cup Team from 1986-88, Bream coached such players as Jim Courier, Michael Chang and Jared Palmer. He also coached on the ATP and WTA professional tennis tours, coached the USA World Cup B16 team in 1986 and has coached at all four tennis majors (U.S. Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open).
Bream is still teaching tennis and coaching promising local juniors as the assistant tennis professional at Avila Bay Athletic Club. He also is helping to deliver groceries to needy individuals through the Estero Bay Kindness Coalition in Morro Bay and helps with tennis fundraisers for various organizations in the area.
Bream played one season of tennis with the Mustangs after transferring from Pima Community College in Tucson, where he played No. 1 singles and earned a No. 7 national ranking.
The San Marcos High School (Santa Barbara) graduate earned his undergraduate degree from Cal Poly in physical education in 1980 and his master's degree, also in physical education, in 1982.
He and his wife Carol live in Morro Bay.
