Milich previously served as head coach for the Mustangs for 14 seasons (2006-20), leading the program to unprecedented success. During his tenure, Cal Poly captured 21 individual conference titles and saw five swimmers qualify for the NCAA Championships. In addition, all 28 individual school records and all relay team school records were shattered multiple times during his time overseeing the program.
Milich was head coach for the Mustangs when the Big West last sponsored swimming and diving in 2009-10. That season, Milich led Cal Poly to a third-place finish on both the men’s and women’s sides, securing the highest-ever finish for the school at the conference championships.
Under Milich, student-athletes earned conference all-academic honors 157 times and the program had a 100 percent graduation success rate within the cycle observed from 2006 through 2012.
Milich also coached some of the most esteemed swimmers to ever come through the program, mentoring Jimmy Deiparine — who competed at the 2015 NCAA Championships after breaking the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record in the 100-yard breaststroke — and Sonny Fierro, who secured All-American Honorable Mention recognition in 2014 in the men's 1,650 freestyle.
Milich helped renovate the program’s Anderson Aquatic Center into a state-of-the-art facility in 2009 as well, and he is a 12-time recipient of the American Swimming Coaches Association Coach of Excellence Award. He served as the Aquatics Director for the Clovis Swim Club for 16 years before beginning his coaching career at Cal Poly in 2006.
Prior to reaching the collegiate ranks, Milich coached 61 high school All-Americans, including Olympians Janet Evans, John Moffet and John Mykkanen. He was named the California Swimming Coach of the Year in 1987 while coaching for El Dorado High School.
