Named interim head coach of the CalPoly men’s soccer team on Aug. 11, 2014, Phil Ruskin is inhis second overall season with the Mustang program.
During Ruskin’s initial 2013 season on campus as anassistant coach, Cal Poly posted a 10-9-2 mark en route tofinishing seventh among Division I teams with a program-record 43goals scored. The Mustangs also finished ninth nationally in totalpoints (124) and goals per game (2.05), 10th in points per game(5.90), 15th in assists (38) and 20th in assists per game (1.81).Additionally, Cal Poly placed four players on the All-Big WestConference team.
Ruskin arrived in San Luis Obispo after serving as an assistant atStony Brook (2011-12), where he was charged with the direction andtraining of the program’s goalkeepers and overall recruitingefforts. Ruskin helped the Seawolves to the 2011 America EastConference championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Healso oversaw the development of goalkeeper Stefan Manz, theprogram’s career leader with 17 shutouts, and three-timeAmerica East Midfielder of the Year and two-time All-Americaselection Leonardo Fernandes, drafted in January by Major LeagueSoccer’s Philadelphia Union.
Prior to his time at Stony Brook, Ruskin was an assistant coachand director of operations at Valparaiso (2009-11), where he workedin all aspects of player training and recruiting and also served asan assistant strength and conditioning coach for the athleticsdepartment. With the Crusaders, Ruskin helped transform defenderStefan Antonijevic into a 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft pick bySporting KC.
A four-year letterwinner (2004-07) at Division III Elmhurst (Ill.)College, Ruskin – still ranked 10th in program history with66 appearances – owns a United States Soccer Federation Acoaching license and National Soccer Coaches Association of AmericaAdvanced National and Goalkeeper Level 2 diplomas.
