Having enjoyed successful tenures at Creighton and Washington, Don Vanden Berge is in his first season as the Cal Poly men’s basketball program’s director of operations.
Vanden Berge, who arrived in San Luis Obispo after serving last season as an assistant coach at two-year Jacksonville College (Jacksonville, Texas), is responsible for scout work and opponent game preparation, scheduling team travel and logistics, coordinating video exchange, organizing summer camps, facility scheduling and overseeing Cal Poly’s student managerial staff.
As an assistant coach at Jacksonville College for the 2014-15 season, Vanden Berge was tasked with recruiting, practice planning, film editing and scouting report compilations. Jacksonville College finished 19-12 and, with Vanden Berge on staff, four Jaguars moved on to Division I programs.
On sabbatical during the 2013-14 season with the purpose of observing the daily workings of collegiate programs, Vanden Berge traveled the United States visiting practices and interacting with coaches at more than 70 different schools.
A volunteer assistant with a Creighton program that reached the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Vanden Berge assisted the Jays coaching staff with scout work and the compilation of postgame reports.
An assistant coach with NAIA Biola University (La Mirada, Calif.) from 2007-09, Vanden Berge later served as an administrative assistant at Washington (2009-12) where he helped coordinate recruiting efforts, aided with scouting reports and generated postgame film evaluations. While Vanden Berge was in Seattle and working under current Cal Poly associate head coach Paul Fortier, Washington captured two Pac-12 Conference Tournament titles, one regular season championship and reached the 2010 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.
A 2007 graduate of Whitworth University (Spokane, Wash.), Vanden Berge earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Biola in 2009.
