SEATTLE, Wash. — The Cal Poly women’s soccer team wrapped up nonconference play Saturday, falling 2-0 at Seattle.

“Tough result tonight against a very good Seattle side,” head coach Bernado Silva said after the match. “I’m a little disappointed about how we came out from the initial whistle. I felt like it took us a little bit to get ourselves going, and by the time we got going in the game, we were down and chasing … but I was proud of the effort in the second half.”

After the Redhawks (6-3-2) scored in the 27th minute, senior Annika Smith nearly leveled the match about four minutes later when her shot right in front of the goal was steered just clear of the left post by the Seattle goalkeeper.

Seattle doubled its lead in the 41st minute and held on to that advantage for the remainder of the match.

Junior Mya Clarke and sophomore Kammy MacLennan also had shots on goal in the second half, and junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski finished with four saves in net. Junior Isis Salazar-Ortega, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, made her first career start as a Mustang in the match.

“I thought today we created a couple of good chances,” Silva said, “but we’re just missing that final piece, whether that’s the final ball, the cross or the finish … but I’m really proud of the way we’re defending.”

Cal Poly (3-3-2) returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host Cal Baptist at 6 p.m. Wednesday in its Big West opener. You can purchase tickets to the match HERE.

“The Big West is going to present an array of challenges,” Silva said, “every team is a little bit different, so we’re going to take it one game at a time and accumulate as many points as we can to make sure we’re in the Big West tournament.”
