Smith Nets Brace, White Defeats Green 2-1 in Annual Scrimmage

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A brace from senior captain Annika Smith propelled White to a 2-1 victory over Green in the annual intrasquad scrimmage for the Cal Poly women’s soccer program on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs’ roster was split in half to create the Green and White teams for the scrimmage and two 35-minute halves were played.
Smith, the defending Big West Offensive Player of the Year, stole the spotlight in the scrimmage. She found the back of the net for the first time in the 20th minute, burying a header off a perfectly played free kick into the box by junior Miah Thomas, a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield.
White carried that 1-0 advantage into halftime before sophomore Kenzie Herzing leveled the match for Green just over seven minutes into the second half. Fifth year Sophia Minnite forced a turnover in the midfield and fed a pass to Herzing, who blasted a shot from about 25 yards out to top left corner of the net.
The two sides traded chances before Smith struck again with less than 14 minutes remaining in the scrimmage. Junior Sam Liaty, a transfer from Tarleton State, sent a perfect corner kick from the left side into the box and Smith rose up and headed home another shot to give White a 2-1 lead.
White fended off Green down the stretch to secure the victory as fifth year goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki finished with a pair of saves for White. Junior Shannon Porubski secured two saves for Green.
The Mustangs wrap up preseason prep at 6 p.m. Thursday when they host Pepperdine for an exhibition match. The defending Big West champions officially open their 2026 campaign at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when they welcome UNLV to Spanos Stadium.

This fall, the Mustangs are looking to build off one of their most successful seasons in program history that saw Cal Poly capture its fourth Big West Tournament Championship in program history and 14th Big West title overall in Bernardo Silva’s first year at the helm. The Mustangs return 16 letterwinners from their 2025 squad that earned the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 21 years. In addition to the crop of experienced returners, Cal Poly added nine talented transfers over the offseason to join the six incoming freshmen, bolstering its roster to make another run at the NCAA Tournament and defend its Big West Championship crown.
