
No. 6 Mustangs Drop Pair of Close Matches to No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 USC

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — At day one of the Best in the West Friday in Laguna Beach, Cal Poly beach volleyball dropped a pair of close matches to No. 2 UCLA and No. 4 USC.
The No. 6 Mustangs fell in both matches by scores of 3-2. Cal Poly’s No. 4 pair of Julia Westby and Elise Lenahan won both of their matches on the day. They remain unbeaten together on the season at 17-0.
Against the No. 2 Bruins, Cal Poly’s Lenahan and Westby won their match at the No. 4 spot as did the Mustangs’ No. 3 pair of Quinn Perry and Ashleigh Adams. UCLA won in straight sets at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots. The No. 1 spot came down to a third set with the Bruins coming out slightly on top in the decider, 16-14 to clinch the dual.
Later against No. 4 USC, it was once again Lenahan and Westby winning at the No. 4 spot for the Mustangs. Also getting a win was the No. 2 pair of Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter to push their record to 22-2 on the year. The Trojans collected straight sets win at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to score two points. Tied 2-2, the dual came down to a third set at the No. 5 spot. However, it was USC’s pair pulling out the win 15-11 to seal the victory.
Cal Poly will have a chance to bounce back Saturday with two more matches in Laguna Beach at Best in the West. They will take on No. 10 Long Beach State at 11 a.m. followed by No. 1 Stanford at 2 p.m.
