BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell took advantage of two Cal Poly errors in a three-run sixth-inning rally and went on to defeat the Mustangs 5-2 in a season-opening baseball game for both clubs Friday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
In the first meeting ever between the two schools, Cal Poly trimmed Campbell's lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth before the host Camels responded with three hits and the two Mustang errors for a 5-1 advantage.
Cal Poly was just 1-for-18 with runners on base and 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Both teams stranded eight runners on the basepaths.
The seven Mustang hits included a single and double by third baseman Alejandro Garza and a pair of singles by center fielder Casey Murray Jr. Campbell produced seven hits as well, including three doubles. Seven different Camels notched the seven hits.
Mustang junior right-hander Griffin Naess threw 34 pitches in the first inning, allowing a run without benefit of a hit as Tyler Rumley drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a pair of fly balls to center field.
Campbell added its second run in the third before the Mustangs broke through for a run in the sixth. Alejandro Garza doubled to lead off the frame and came home on a double-play grounder.
The Camels bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. Two of the runs were unearned as Cal Poly committed a pair of throwing errors.
The Mustangs scored their final run in the eighth as Garza walked and came around to score on a groundout and Jake Downing's RBI single up the middle.
Naess (0-1) allowed two runs and three hits over five innings in absorbing the loss, striking out four and walking three.
Junior southpaw Lleyton Grubich (1-0) gave up just one run and scattered five hits for the victory with one walk and four strikeouts.
Due to an advancing weather front expected to reach Buies Creek on Saturday night, the Mustangs and Camels will play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Pacific. Junior southpaw Josh Volmerding and Oregon State transfer Laif Palmer, a junior right-hander, are expected to start on the mound for Cal Poly.
