SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After an historic showing in its final major regular season tournament, the Cal Poly wrestling team returns to dual action this Saturday at 7 p.m., hosting Duke inside Mott Athletics Center.
As part of Student Appreciation Night during Saturday’s match, the Mustangs will be giving away a brand new PlayStation 5 with Fortnite to one lucky Cal Poly student. To enter, all students have to do is show up before the start of the third bout of the dual and claim a raffle ticket at the marketing tent. The lucky winner will be announced prior to the final match of the night. As always, student admission is free.
For those unable to make it to Saturday’s dual in-person, you can catch the action live on FloWrestling and for free on the Cal Poly wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle). Tickets to the dual can be purchased HERE.
The Mustangs, 2-2 in duals this season, enter Saturday’s dual fresh off a remarkable showing at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Illinois on Dec. 29-30. Cal Poly captured a program record team finish of fourth at the historic tournament thanks to a program record six individual placers — Koda Holeman (third, 125 pounds), Andre Gonzales (fourth, 149), Anthony Berg (sixth, 157), Cash Stewart (sixth, 174), Trevor Tinker (sixth, 285) and Aiden Simmons (eighth, 141). The six placers bested their previous program record at the tournament of three set in 2023.
Eleven of the 12 Mustangs that wrestled in the tourney earned at least one victory with seven securing multiple wins. The strong showing was led by Holeman who posted a 5-1 mark at 125 pounds to secure third — tied for the second highest individual finish by a Mustang ever at Midlands and the best since Boris Novachkov won the 141-pound title in 2010.
With a 14-3 record and a perfect 4-0 mark in duals, Holeman is currently one of five nationally ranked wrestlers for the Mustangs, according to InterMat. 2025 All-American Zeth Romney is ranked No. 15 at 141 pounds, Holeman 18th at 125, Ceasar Garza 22nd at 184, Tinker 24th at 285 and Gonzales 33rd at 149. Both Romney and Tinker are not expected to wrestle Saturday.
Garza, who didn’t wrestle at Midlands, has impressed all season long. The Michigan State transfer is 12-2 overall this season and is still undefeated in duals (4-0). Gonzales, an Ohio State transfer, earned a national ranking for the first time this season this week after capturing fourth at 149 pounds at Midlands with a 6-2 showing. Seeded No. 28 out of the 32 wrestlers in his weight class, Gonzales opened the tournament with a first-round upset victory over the fifth seed.
Berg will be looking to carry some momentum from his performance at Midlands into Saturday’s dual as well after he placed sixth at 157 pounds. The redshirt freshman was the No. 32 seed in his weight class, but he found a way to pull off a massive first round upset over No. 1 seed and No. 22 ranked Mason Shrader from Central Michigan, pinning him less than a minute into the third period. Overall, Berg went 4-3 at the tourney to improve to 13-6 on the year.
Duke boasts a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 20 Aidan Wallace at 174 and No. 25 Connor Barket at 285. The Blue Devils are 6-6 this season and wrestle Stanford at 7 p.m. Friday before traveling to San Luis Obispo to take on the Mustangs.
Following Saturday’s home dual, Cal Poly travels to Corvallis on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. to face Pac-12 foe Oregon State.
