Cal Poly Completes Flawless Tournament with Sweep of San Jose State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball team capped a dominant home-opening tournament with a decisive straight-sets victory (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) over San Jose State on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs finished the weekend a perfect 3-0 without conceding a single set.
The Mustangs (6-3) controlled the match from the start, once again powered by an incredibly efficient offense that recorded a .357 hitting percentage, their third consecutive match above .350, and a season-high 52 kills for a three-set match. Cal Poly now paces the Big West with a .293 team hitting percentage for the year.
For the second straight match, the defense held its opponent under a .200 hitting clip, a feat they have accomplished four times this season while forcing double-digit errors in every match. The effort was epitomized in the second set, where the Mustangs stifled the Spartan attack, allowing only eight kills.
Annabelle Thalken spearheaded the offense, leading all players with 14 kills on an impressive .481 hitting percentage. She also added a match-high four block assists, providing key points throughout the contest.
Emma Fredrick and Kendall Beshear offered crucial support, contributing 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Fredrick secured a double-double with 13 digs, showcasing her all-around game, while averaging an impressive 4.22 kills per set through the tournament.
Orchestrating the attack with precision, Emme Bullis dished out 44 assists, guiding the Mustangs to hitting percentages of .270, .421, and .375 across the three sets. Bullis also notched a double-double with 11 digs.
Chloe Leluge guarded the net for 1.22 blocks per set through the tournament and now sits third in the Big West.
The Mustangs opened the first set with a substantial 6-1 run and never trailed. Despite a strong push from San Jose State, Cal Poly closed out the 25-20 victory with key kills from four different players.
Cal Poly dominated the second set, hitting over .400. After an early 5-5 tie, the Mustangs launched a decisive 20-9 run to secure a 25-14 win.
The third set proved the most competitive, featuring four ties. The Spartans held an early lead until the Mustangs tied it at 14 as part of a 9-1 run. Cal Poly never looked back, closing out the match 25-20 to complete a perfect 9-0 set record for the tournament.
The Mustangs return to Mott Athletics Center next week to host the SLO Classic from Sept. 18-20, welcoming Saint Mary's, ranked Utah, and future Big West opponent Cal Baptist.
