Cal Poly Secures First Win and Straight-Set Sweep of 2025 Season

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After a hard-fought season-opening loss to Minnesota last night, the Cal Poly Mustangs responded with a statement victory on Saturday, sweeping the St. Thomas Tommies in straight sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-21) for their first win of the year.
The Mustangs' offense operated with surgical precision, compiling a .310 hitting percentage while committing a season-low eight errors. Every attacker who registered a kill hit at least .250, led by a flawless performance from middle blocker Chloe Leluge, who hammered 13 errorless attacks.
Leluge was again a force at the net, finishing with five kills and four total blocks. Alongside her, true freshman Charlotte Kelly shined in a breakout performance, adding six kills and three blocks while hitting .364.
Emma Fredrick powered the offense with a team-high 11 kills and 31 attacks, her second straight match with double-digit kills. She also contributed six digs and a match-best three service aces. Kendall Beshear was equally impressive, delivering nine kills to go with seven digs, tying Fredrick for the team season lead in kills (21). Annabelle Thalken rounded out a balanced attack with five kills.
Team captain and setter Emme Bullis recorded her second straight double-double, dishing out a season-high 31 assists and scooping 10 digs. Anchoring the back row, libero Ella Scott co-led all players with 13 digs and helped initiate the offense with three assists and two aces.
Cal Poly set the tone early with a dominant first-set performance, leading from start to finish. The Mustangs faced stiffer resistance in the second but never trailed, leaning on key kills from Leluge and Beshear along with 20 team digs to hold off the Tommies.
St. Thomas surged ahead in the third set, building an 8-5 advantage before the Mustangs rallied. Cal Poly answered with a decisive 15-6 run to seize control and closed out the match to complete the sweep.
