SAN LUIS OBISPO – For the first time in Cal Poly men’s soccer program history, multiple Mustangs have been named to a Hermann Trophy Watch List as senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune and junior defender Parker Owens earned candidacy for collegiate national player of the year recognition.
Among the 29 standouts named, defending Big West regular season champion Cal Poly joined Cornell as the only programs – among more than 200 Division I squads – with two candidates.
Additionally, UC Davis (senior forward Cason Goodman) was the only other Big West program to feature a Hermann Trophy Watch List representative.
McCune and Owens are the first Mustangs named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List since midfielder Chase Minter in 2015. Previous Mustangs who earned recognition include forward Mackenzie Pridham (2013) and defender Patrick Sigler (2009).
McCune, the defending Big West Goalkeeper of the Year selection and ranked No. 10 on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Men’s National Top 100 players, closed 2024 with a program record 0.63 goals against average and conceded multiple goals in a match just twice in 19 appearances.
Owens, the reigning Big West Defender of the Year honoree and No. 37 on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s listing, helped Cal Poly concede just seven times from open play in 19 matches last fall.
The 2025 watch list was compiled by members of the Division I Men’s All-America Council from a list of returning 2024 All-Americans and United Soccer Coaches All-Region first team players.
A total of 15 players will be named 2025 Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Dec. 9 at the conclusion of NCAA Division I All-America voting. From that list, head coaches will cast votes and three players will be named finalists. The 2025 recipient will be announced Jan. 9, 2026, in a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
