Mustangs Finish 2025 with Most Hits in Division I Baseball

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It should come as no surprise that the Cal Poly baseball team enjoyed so much success in 2025. Just check the numbers in the final Division I statistics released by the NCAA last week.
The Mustangs finished No. 1 in the nation with 701 hits. Coach Larry Lee's squad also claimed the eighth spot with a .317 team batting average, ninth in doubles with 137, ninth in fielding percentage at .981 and 10th with 47 sacrifice bunts.
Individually, third baseman Alejandro Garza and second baseman Ryan Fenn finished 13th and 16th, respectively, with 92 and 91 hits. Garza also was ninth and Fenn No. 40 in toughest to strike out with averages of 16.4 and 11.3 at-bats per strikeout respectively.
One other top-10 finish was earned by shortstop Nate Castellon as he placed 10th with 13 sacrifice bunts.
Add it all up and it's easy to figure out how Cal Poly won 43 games, the second-highest victory total in program history, en route to its second Big West championship and fourth NCAA postseason berth.
In final Big West statistics, Cal Poly as a team finished No. 1 in batting average, fielding percentage, games played (62), at-bats (2,212), hits, doubles, sacrifice bunts, putouts, assists, fewest stolen bases allowed (34), wins and innings pitched.
Individually, Mustangs who were conference leaders include Garza in hits and at-bats (292), Fenn in doubles (19), Josh Volmerding in strikeouts looking (21) and starts (17), Dylan Kordic and Casey Murray Jr. in fielding percentage (1.000), Zach Daudet in double plays turned (39) and Jack Collins in runners caught stealing (22).
Cal Poly, 43-19 this season, won 23 of 30 Big West games (eight of 10 series) and went 4-1 to capture the first Big West postseason tournament in 27 years. The Mustangs split four games in the NCAA Eugene Regional, defeating Oregon and Utah Valley while falling twice to College World Series qualifier Arizona.
Lee earned his 700th career win at Cal Poly with a 9-5 victory at Cal State Bakersfield on May 3 and will take a 713-552-2 career mark into his 24th season with the Mustangs in 2026.
Cal Poly also set an attendance record with a season average of 2,056 fans for 26 home dates inside Baggett Stadium.
