Cal Poly Baseball Bows Out of Eugene Regional in Final Loss to Arizona
6/2/2025 1:00:00 AM | Baseball
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, however, fell 14-0 to No. 21 Arizona on Sunday night as the Wildcats punched a ticket to the Super Regionals next weekend against the winner of the Chapel Hill Regional final between North Carolina and Oklahoma.
Cal Poly finished the year 43-19, the second-highest victory total in program history, along with its second Big West Conference championship and its fourth trip to the postseason, facing two former Pac-12 schools and the Western Athletic Conference tournament winner.
Daudet's third hit of the game and his ninth home run of the year lifted Cal Poly to its fifth win in as many tries against Utah Valley, which joins the Big West on July 1, 2026. The Mustangs swept a three-game series against the Wolverines in 2021 at Baggett Stadium and also earned an 8-6 win in a tournament at Surprise, Ariz., in 2010.
Cal Poly earned its third win in four extra-inning games this season. Utah Valley finished its season 33-29.
The Mustangs overcame a 4-1 deficit with a five-run fourth-inning rally highlighted by a solo home run by Cam Hoiland, an RBI single by Ryan Fenn and a two-run double by Nate Castellon for a 6-4 lead. A Utah Valley balk also pushed across a run.
Utah Valley scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 6-6 and it stayed that way until Daudet smashed a 1-2 pitch from Carston Herman over the wall in right-center field for the victory.
Cal Poly outhit Utah Valley 13-6, led by Daudet, Fenn and Hoiland, each with three hits. Fenn extended his hitting streak to 21 games while Casey Murray Jr's 17-game streak came to an end.
Jayden Smith had three hits for Utah Valley.
The win went to Mustang senior southpaw Jake Torres (6-4), who struck out two and walked one over 2 1/3 scoreless hitless innings. Chris Downs tossed 6 1/3 innings in relief with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Herman (5-4) suffered the loss for the Wolverines.
Cal Poly, which scored its first run in the second inning on doubles by Hoiland and Dante Vachini, recorded double-digit hits for the 40th time in its last 54 games.
Arizona ended Cal Poly's postseason run with 14 runs on 13 hits, including six home runs. Center fielder Aaron Walton smashed three out of PK Park, driving in six runs in a 4-for-5 day at the plate, while third baseman Maddox Mihalakis homered twice in a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs. Tommy Spillane added a two-run shot in the eighth frame.
Cal Poly mustered six hits off four Arizona pitchers, two singles by shortstop Nate Castellon and a double off the bat of Dylan Kordic. Fenn ended the season with a 22-game hitting streak following his eighth-inning single.
The Mustangs had two runners on base just once on a single and walk in the sixth inning and never had a runner reach third base in the game. They were retired in order just twice.
Smith Bailey (3-3) pitched six scoreless innings for the win, scattering four hits with five strikeouts. The loss was charged to Mustang starter Ethan Marmie as he gave up six runs and six hits in one-plus inning.
Hoiland, Murray and Torres all were named to the Eugene Regional all-tournament team.
Hoiland was 6-for-17 in four regional games with two home runs, a double and three RBIs while Murray finished 7-for-14 with a pair of doubles, one home run and three RBIs of his own. Fenn added six hits while Daudet and Vachini each contributed five hits.
Torres pitched in each of Cal Poly's first three regional contests, compiling a 2-0 record and striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
Mustang catcher Jack Collins threw out a runner trying to steal in each game Sunday, giving him 22 for the season, tops in the Big West.
