RENO – Recording par on his initial seven holes before Monday’s NCAA Regional opening round was suspended after just two hours due to high winds, Cal Poly men’s golf senior Baron Szeto sits in a tie for seventh entering the resumption of the opening 18 holes on Tuesday.
With Monday’s opening round at the par-72, 7,452-yard Montreux Golf & Country Club scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and pushed back multiple times before a 4 p.m. shotgun start was finalized, none of the field’s 70 players finished more than eight holes following the high wind advisory.
Representing Cal Poly as an individual competitor, Szeto – the nation’s 101st-ranked player and a two-time tournament champion during the regular season – trails overall leader Ian Maspat of San Diego by only three strokes.
Round No. 1 is scheduled to resume at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The second round will begin immediately after with an intention to complete the initial 36 holes. The final round is still scheduled for Wednesday.
To qualify for the May 23-28 NCAA Championship, Szeto would need to be the highest finisher in the 70-player field not from one of the five programs advancing to the NCAA Championship.
