SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men’s golf program’s first NCAA Regionals invitee in 10 years, senior Baron Szeto pursues a spot at the NCAA Championship when opening play at the Reno Regional Monday, May 12.
Hosted by Nevada at the par-72, 7,452-yard Montreux Golf & Country Club, the three-round regional comprises 13 qualifying programs and five at-large individuals – with Szeto Cal Poly’s sole representative – competing over 54 holes May 12-14.
To qualify for the May 23-28 NCAA Championship, Szeto would need to be the highest finisher in the 70-player field not from one of the five programs advancing to the NCAA Championship.
Named to the All-Big West first team Tuesday, Szeto enters the NCAA Regionals as the nation’s 101st-ranked player after recording a 70.2 stroke average through 33 rounds while firing 18 rounds under par and a further 14 in the 60s. He secured tournament titles at Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club (Sept. 18-20) and Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Invitational (April 18-19).
Just Cal Poly’s third four-time All-Big West honoree, Szeto – aside from his tournament wins – finished second at California’s Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7-8), third at Western Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic (Feb. 16-18), seventh at Fresno State’s Nick Watney Invitational (March 24-25) and 10th at Cal Poly’s own Preserve Golf Club Collegiate (Oct. 28-29).
One of two Mustangs selected for this year’s NCAA Regionals after women’s standout Jensen Jalufka finished 37th at the Gold Canyon Regional Wednesday, Szeto is the first Cal Poly men’s player picked for postseason action since Brian De Los Santos in 2015. With Cal Poly reinstating golf for the 2000-01 season, only two other Mustangs – Geoff Gonzalez (2007, 2009, 2011) and Travis Bertoni (2003-04) – had previously been selected as individuals for the NCAA Regionals.
Senior Baron Szeto opens NCAA Regional action on Monday from Montreux Golf & Country Club in Reno! Tee time for day No. 1 is 10:53 a.m. with live scoring link below. #RideHigh
