SAN LUIS OBISPO – After turning in one of the finest seasons in Cal Poly men’s golf history, senior Baron Szeto became the first Mustang in 10 years to earn individual selection to the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday morning.
Representing Cal Poly at one of the six NCAA Regional sites, Szeto will compete over 54 holes May 12-14 at Montreux Golf and Country Club (Reno, Nev.). Szeto was one of just five individuals named to the site and one of only two Big West individuals selected for postseason play.
“The NCAA Regional is a prestigious tournament with a terrific field of collegiate competitors, so we’re proud to have Baron represent the Mustangs at the Reno site at Montreux next week,” Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe said. “Baron earned this through a stellar senior season of play. He’s gathered many fans over the course of his four years and what a culmination of his efforts this postseason run will be.”
Szeto entered the April 27-29 Big West Championship as the nation’s 82nd-ranked player after securing tournament victories at Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club (Sept. 18-20) and Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Invitational (April 18-19).
Aside from those victories, Szeto finished second at California’s Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7-8), third at Western Kentucky’s Mesquite Desert Classic (Feb. 16-18), seventh at Fresno State’s Nick Watney Invitational (March 24-25) and 10th at Cal Poly’s own Preserve Golf Club Collegiate (Oct. 28-29).
He led Cal Poly during the year with a 70.2 stroke average through 33 rounds while firing 18 rounds under par and a further 14 in the 60s.
One of two Mustangs selected for this year’s NCAA Regionals after women’s standout Jensen Jalufka, Szeto is the first Cal Poly men’s player picked for postseason action since Brian De Los Santos in 2015. With Cal Poly reinstating golf for the 2000-01 season, only two other Mustangs – Geoff Gonzalez (2009, 2011) and Travis Bertoni (2003-04) – have been selected as individuals for the NCAA Regionals.
