Cal Poly Suffers Setback in Series Sweep to UC Irvine
4/27/2025 7:00:00 PM | Baseball
Trailing by a run in the ninth inning, UC Irvine was down to its final strike twice.
With two outs and Anteater runners at first and second, Jacob McCombs was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count, loading the bases. Then Chase Call walked with a full count, tying the game at 8-8.
Rowan Felsch knocked a 2-2 pitch into left field, driving in two runs and snapping the deadlock, as UC Irvine rallied for a 10-8 victory over Cal Poly and completed a sweep of the three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday inside Baggett Stadium.
Cal Poly's four pitchers in the game combined to issue eight walks and hit four UC Irvine batters. The defense committed three errors as well, leading to two unearned runs.
The loss spoiled three-hit games for Cal Poly second baseman Ryan Fenn and shortstop Nate Castellon. Fenn doubled once and singled twice, driving in one run, while Castellon produced his second three-RBI game of the week with a two-run single in the third inning, tying the game at 4-4, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth, capping a three-run uprising.
Third baseman Alejandro Garza contributed a pair of hits, including his third home run of the year leading off the fifth inning. Garza leads the team with 23 multiple-hit games while Fenn has nine three-hit contests, tops on the squad.
Five Anteater batters had two-hit games as UC Irvine outhit Cal Poly 13-12.
Neither starting pitcher made it through two innings Sunday. Cal Poly's Ethan Marmie surrendered four runs over 1 2/3 innings while UC Irvine's Ryder Brooks, who tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout last week against Hawaii, was knocked out with one out in the second inning after allowing two runs.
Ricky Ojeda earned his nation-leading 11th win of the season without a loss, allowing a run and two hits over two innings with a pair of strikeouts. The loss was charged to Jake Torres (2-4) as he gave up the tying and go-ahead runs in the final frame of his 3 1/3-inning stint on the mound.
The series drew 7,300 fans, No. 6 in Cal Poly's record book for a three-game set.
The Mustangs, 15-1 and a game ahead of UC Irvine in the Big West race two weeks ago, have lost their last five conference games. The schedule favors Cal Poly in the final three weeks of the regular season as all five upcoming opponents are under the .500 mark with RPIs in the 200s.
The Mustangs play at Santa Clara (16-23, RPI of 212) on Tuesday at 5 p.m., followed by a Big West series next weekend at Cal State Bakersfield (17-29, RPI of 259). Cal Poly also hosts Pepperdine (11-33, RPI of 274) for one game and visits CSUN (10-28, RPI of 212) next week and finishes the regular season at home against UC Riverside (13-28, RPI of 229) In three weeks.
Cal Poly's RPI after Sunday's setback is 28.
