
Szeto Leads at Kepler Invitational as Cal Poly Sits Fifth

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Baron Szeto (above) fired a four-under 67 during Friday's second round of Ohio State's Robert Kepler Invitational to take the overall lead by one stroke as the Cal Poly men's golf program sits in fifth position entering Saturday's final 18 holes.
At the par-71, 7,455-yard OSU Golf Club Scarlet Course, Szeto – the nation's 129th-ranked player – carded a one-over 72 during Friday's opening round before producing five birdies against one bogey in the second round. Ascending seven spots to the top, Szeto leads Peicheng Chen of St. John's by one stroke.
Playing as an independent, sophomore Louis Pilod is 16th, climbing nine spots in the afternoon with a second-round, three-over 74 and two-round, seven-over 149 (75-74).
After recording a morning 77, senior Parker Mapes sustained just two bogeys in the afternoon and, with a two-over 73, slid 20 spots up and into 20th position with a two-round, eight-over 150 (77-73).
Freshman Nolan Kuszyk was Cal Poly's biggest mover between rounds Friday, utilizing three afternoon birdies for a second-round, two-over 73. Climbing 24 spots, Kuszyk enters Saturday's final round in 35th with a 10-over 152 (79-73).
Sophomore Leo Metzger enjoyed a pair of birdies in each round, but produced dual 77s and sists 45th overall with a 12-over 154. Fellow sophomore Reese Sato, meanwhile, is 64th overall after chalking up two afternoon birdies.
As a program, Cal Poly – 27 over during the morning round – was just six over in the afternoon to climb six spots and into fifth place in the 13-team field. With a two-round, 27-over 595, Cal Poly trails overall leader Nebraska by only six strokes.
Third-round action for Cal Poly at the Kepler Invitational gets underway at 8:15 a.m. PT on Saturday.
