Cal Poly Forces Sunday Rubber Match with 12-5 Battering of Hawai'i
4/12/2025 8:00:00 PM | Baseball
Castellon's RBI single in the first inning capped a four-run rally, his run-scoring double in the third frame gave Cal Poly a 5-2 advantage and his solo home run in the seventh put a lid on a five-run Mustang uprising as the freshman produced his fifth game of three or more hits this season.
Hoiland's solo blast in the sixth was his fourth of the year for the Mustangs, who compiled double-digit hits for the 21st time in their last 26 contests and double-figure runs for the 11th time this season.
Both teams enter Sunday's 1 pm series finale with identical 24-9 overall records. At 13-1, Cal Poly regained sole possession of first place in the Big West as UC Irvine (12-2) fell 7-3 at UC Davis. Hawai'i dropped into fourth place with a 10-7 conference mark.
Mustang sophomore lefty Josh Volmerding didn't go the required five innings to be eligible for the win, but gave up just two runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 frames with two walks and four strikeouts.
Chris Downs, another sophomore southpaw, earned his fourth victory without a loss as he also allowed two runs and three hits over 3 1/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Troy Cooper tossed a one-run ninth inning.
The loss went to Hawai'i senior right-hander Liam O'Brien (2-2) as he surrendered four runs without getting an out in the first inning. All four batters at the top of the Cal Poly lineup drew walks and all four scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to Jack Collins, a sacrifice fly by Casey Murray Jr., an infield single by Castellon and Hoiland's RBI single.
Cal Poly added a run in the third on Castellon's run-scoring double, plated another in the sixth on Hoiland's homer and broke the game open with a five-run seventh highlighted by Ryan Fenn's RBI single, Murray's second sacrifice fly of the game, another sacrifice fly by Dylan Kordic and Castellon's homer.
Alejandro Garza, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a seventh-inning single, knocked in a run with another single in the eighth, completing Cal Poly's scoring. During the streak, Garza is hitting .408 (29-for-71) with nine doubles, his first home run as a Mustang (in Friday's 10-inning 4-2 Hawai'i win), 12 RBIs and 11 multiple-hit games, including six in his last seven starts.
Fenn extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two singles and has nine multiple-hit games in his last 13 starts. Also with two hits Saturday were Hoiland and first baseman Jake Downing. Left fielder Dante Vachini added his second triple of the year. Murray and Hoiland each had a pair of RBIs.
Hawai'i right fielder Jared Quandt singled three times while center fielder Matthew Miura, catcher Hunter Faildo and shortstop Jordan Donahue each contributed a pair of hits.
Cal Poly has won 23 of its last 27 games after a 1-5 start and is 12-4 at home this season. The Mustangs still have their 11-game winning streak on the road intact, own a 6-0 mark in midweek games and improved their RPI to 19 with Saturday's win.
Sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie (4-2, 4.56 ERA) of Cal Poly will face freshman righty Cooper Walls (2-1, 2.70 ERA) in Sunday's rubber game.
