Kordic Tallies Two Homers in One Inning as Mustangs Continue Winning
3/11/2025 10:30:00 PM | Baseball
Beating the Spartans (10-6, 0-0 MWC) continues a fantastic 9-1 stretch for Cal Poly (10-6, 3-0 BWC) since upsetting No. 1 Texas A&M back in February. During this run, Mustang hitters are batting at an astounding .352 clip and averaging 10.9 runs per game.
"This is another great game from our guys," Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee expressed about his team's performance on Tuesday. "The first two weeks of the season have prepared us well for the season ahead."
The Mustangs have won all three midweek contests this season, on the road as well, persisting with their sixth consecutive double-digit hit effort and fourth straight game of double-digit runs.
"One thing you must do is win the majority of your midweek games," Lee asserted. "So far, we're 3-0 and all on the road, so that's a major positive for us. We're in a good spot mentally, the team has responded to any adversity we've faced."
On an absolute tear offensively, Cal Poly has tallied 11 of its 12 total home runs this season in the last ten games. Four of those came against San Jose State, two of which were supplied by senior outfielder Dylan Kordic in an explosive second inning. Kordic finished Tuesday night 3-for-5 with 4 RBI, giving him four multi-hit performances in his five-game hitting streak.
"[Kordic] needs to be an integral part of our offense. He's a middle-third of the order batter, and is starting to get a good feel for it," Lee spoke about the blossoming outfielder. "Part of his slow start was mechanical, but some was mental and he's done a great job getting out of it."
Jack Collins remains Cal Poly's statistical batting leader and had a monster night to show for it, putting together a 2-for-3 night with 5 RBI and his fourth home run of the season. Collins is now tied for the Big West lead with 24 RBI as well.
The Mustangs jumped onto the scoreboard first as Dylan Knowles scored on a wild pitch, to which San Jose State immediately responded with a blooped ball to shallow center field that Casey Murray Jr. attempted a diving catch on and came up empty.
Cal Poly put together its highest scoring half inning of the season in the second, turning over the entire lineup, and all sparked by Kordic's first-pitch leadoff home run. Jake Downing, Dante Vachini, Collins, and Murray Jr. all picked up RBIs in the inning, Downing's being a home run as well. Kordic wrapped up the eight-run inning with his second homer of the day.
Dylan Knowles, Alejandro Garza, Collins, and Kordic, all combined for the remainder of Cal Poly's scoring through nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In all, six Mustangs tallied multiple hits: Vachini (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Garza (2-for-3, 1 RBI), Collins (2-for-3, 5 RBI), Kordic (3-for-5, 4 RBI), Downing (2-for-4, 1 RBI), and Zach Daudet (3-for-4).
True freshman Luke Kalfsbeek earned the win and tossed a career-high nine strikeouts in his second midweek start of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Carson Turnquist was the first reliever out of the bullpen, finally making his much anticipated Cal Poly debut after losing the entirety of last season due to an injury and subsequent surgery.
Troy Cooper, Josh Morano, and Caden Pearlman combined for the final 2 2/3 innings of the victory, with Morano and Pearlman striking out four of the eight Spartans they faced.
Cal Poly stays on the road this weekend with another conference series, this time at Long Beach State beginning with the Friday series opener at 6:00 p.m., though none of the contests will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
