Carter’s Career High Leads Cal Poly Past Roadrunners
3/1/2025 5:58:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Sophomore forward Mary Carter had the best game of her Cal Poly career, recording a double-double while scoring 40 percent of the team's total points to lead the Mustang women's basketball team to a road win over Cal State Bakersfield Saturday, 57-51.
Carter finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds while shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field and knocking down three triples. She was equally as effective in both halves, scoring 11 in the first and 12 in the second. Redshirt sophomore forward Sierra Lichtie was also big for Cal Poly, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.
The difference in the game between the two teams came down to points off turnovers as Cal Poly won that battle 21-9 off of the Roadrunners' 18 turnovers. The other was free throws as the Mustangs were nearly perfect going 13-14 while Cal State Bakersfield was 7-11.
The first half was close throughout as neither team led by more than six at any point. Despite trailing by two heading into the second quarter, Cal Poly led at halftime 28-25.
Tied at 30 in the third, Cal Poly went on a 10-2 run to go up by eight late in the quarter. Bakersfield was able cut it to 40-36 heading into the fourth.
Tied at 41 in the fourth, Cal Poly's defense locked in as they held the Roadrunners to just four points over a four minute span as they went ahead 51-45 with under three minutes to go.
Bakersfield then got back within one, 51-50, with two minutes left. However, Cal Poly got stops on the Roadrunners' next three possessions and as Carter and Shah went 6-6 from the free throw line to seal the win for Cal Poly.
With the Mustangs win and ninth place Cal State Fullerton losing Saturday, Cal Poly needs to win one of its final two remaining games to clinch a spot in the Big West Championship. That could come as early as Thursday, March 6 when the Mustangs go on the road to face aforementioned Cal State Fullerton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN+.
