SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its final tuneup before starting the regular season, Cal Poly women’s basketball put on a big time offensive showing in a 107-42 exhibition victory over NAIA foe Simpson University Thursday morning in Mott Athletics Center.
Four Mustangs scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Gillian Bears’ 25 points. Redshirt sophomore guard Jordan Billing and sophomore guard Vanessa McManus each had 15 points. Freshman forward Charish Thompson added 10 points.
The 107 points scored would have tied a program record if it had been a regulation game. Cal Poly scored 107 points in an overtime game against Long Beach State in 2014.
The Mustangs, who led 54-23 at halftime, shot 53 percent from the field as a team. Their defense forced the Redhawks into 25 turnovers, which Cal Poly turned into 34 points. They also out-rebounded Simpson, 52-25.
Cal Poly will now get ready for the regular season and home opener Monday, Nov. 3 against UC Santa Cruz at 6 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
