SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Three weeks removed from its last competition, the Cal Poly wrestling team returns to the mat this Sunday to host a dual with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at Mott Athletics Center.
The dual starts at noon Sunday and tickets can be purchased HERE. The dual will be streamed live on the Cal Poly wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle) and on FloWrestling with Bill Grundler and Mike Malinconico on the call.
BACK AT MOTT: Sunday’s home dual will mark the Mustangs’ first action inside Mott Athletics Center since hosting a doubleheader against Cal Baptist and Northwestern on Dec. 19. The SIUE dual kicks off a four-match homestand for the Mustangs before they head to Pac-12 rival Cal State Bakersfield on Feb. 23 to wrap up their dual season.
THE CLIMB CONTINUES: In the latest InterMat Team Tournament rankings, Cal Poly moved up to No. 15, marking the program’s highest national ranking in three years. On Feb. 22, 2022, the Mustangs checked in at No. 10 in the same rankings, marking the first time in 39 years the program achieved a top 10 ranking. Cal Poly has steadily climbed up the InterMat rankings throughout the season thanks to some stellar performances, earning a top 25 national ranking as a team for the fifth straight season.
LAST TIME ON THE MAT: In its last action on the mat, Cal Poly advanced to the quarterfinals at the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 10-11 and went 3-2 in duals at the tournament. The Mustangs knocked off George Mason 26-14 in their first dual in Cedar Falls, Iowa, before dropping a thrilling tightly-contested affair with Pac-12 rival Little Rock 22-19 in the quarterfinals. Cal Poly finished the first day of competition with a 23-16 loss to Drexel before rolling to dominant victories over Ohio and Sacred Heart on the final day to improve to 3-6 in duals this season.
Redshirt juniors Chance Lamer, Luka Wick and Trevor Tinker all went 5-0 across Cal Poly’s five duals at the tournament, while redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman posted a 4-1 record and redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney went 2-0.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS: Five Cal Poly wrestlers earned a national ranking in the first edition of the NCAA Coaches rankings released Jan. 23. Romney leads the way at No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds, Chance Lamer is No. 6 at 149 pounds, Wick No. 21 at 165 pounds, Tinker No. 23 at 285 pounds and Holeman No. 32 at 125 pounds.
Romney owns an 11-1 record and has been sensational every time he’s stepped on the mat this season. At the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in December, the Simi Valley, Calif. native won the 133-pound championship, defeating four nationally ranked opponents en route to becoming the first Mustang in 15 years to capture a title at 133 pounds at the tournament. The performance earned him Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors for the fourth time in his career and second time this season. Mostly recently, Romney pinned No. 6-ranked Nasir Bailey at 4:14 in the dual with Little Rock at the NWCA National Duals to pick up his eighth victory this season over a ranked opponent.
Chance Lamer is a perfect 10-0 on the year and 7-0 in duals. The Corvallis, Ore. native is a two-time NCAA Round of 12 qualifier, falling one victory short of earning All-American honors the last two years.
Wick is 8-4 this season and recorded two upset victories over ranked opponents at the NWCA National Duals. Tinker boasts an impressive 17-5 record and Holeman is 15-8.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS: SIUE takes on Cal Baptist in Riverside on Friday night before traveling to San Luis Obispo to face the Mustangs on Sunday. The Cougars are 5-5 in duals this season. SIUE went 1-3 at the NWCA National Duals, defeating Sacred Heart 36-3 and falling to Little Rock 39-6, George Mason 22-12 and Cal State Bakersfield 19-18.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly hosts Oregon State in its Pac-12 dual opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. You can purchase tickets to the dual HERE.
