Kim Foster Carlson and Traci Granger Announced as Interim Co-Head Coaches

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Mustang swimmers Kim Foster Carlson and Traci Granger will serve as interim co-head coaches for the Cal Poly swimming and diving program during the 2024-25 season, while Laurel Abernethy will continue to serve as the Head Diving Coach.
Granger, who will be inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in November, is being elevated to interim co-head coach after serving as an assistant for the program the last two years. Carlson has over 30 years of experience coaching swimming at the youth and recreation levels, and coached the SLO Swim Club the last two years.
Carlson was a two-time Division I All-American at Florida State from 1980-83. In her sole season swimming for the Mustangs in 1984-85, Carlson earned five Division II All-American honors. Granger served as the head coach of the Cal Poly swimming and diving team that season.
Carlson coached thousands of swimmers in the East Bay area for roughly 30 years. The Lompoc, Calif. native and Cabrillo High grad moved back to the Central Coast in 2021 and swam for the SLO Swim Club growing up.
An AIAW Division II National Champion and All-American in the women's 200 and 400 medley relays in 1980, Granger broke countless individual and relay school records during her career in the pool for the Mustangs from 1978-80. Granger, a 1980 Cal Poly grad, has had a decorated Masters swimming career, winning countless world titles and setting a number of world and Pan-American records.
Abernethy is entering her second season overseeing the Cal Poly diving program in 2024-25. Last year under her guidance, five top-five marks in school history were recorded on the diving board.
Cal Poly opens its 2024-25 season at home Friday with the annual King and Queen of the Pool pentathlon against Cal. Diving starts at 10 a.m. with swimming to follow at noon at the Anderson Aquatic Center.
