SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly wrestling head coach Jon Sioredas was recently named president elect of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) during the organization’s annual board meeting. The appointment puts Sioredas next in line to serve as president of the NWCA in 2026-28.
I'm eager to do my part in supporting the continued growth of a sport that has meant so much to me.Jon Sioredas, Cal Poly Wrestling Head Coach
"I have great respect for the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the valuable work it has done for our sport,” Sioredas said, “and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a leadership role as we face ongoing challenges in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.
It's humbling to follow in the footsteps of so many accomplished coaches, and I'm eager to do my part in supporting the continued growth of a sport that has meant so much to me."
“On behalf of the NWCA board of directors and our president, coach Troy Nickerson, I want to congratulate coach Sioredas for being voted onto the NWCA board as our new vice president,” NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. “He is a well-respected, transformational leader who will bring valuable expertise to our organization.”
Sioredas, who is entering his ninth season as the head wrestling coach in 2024-25, has helped oversee a complete revitalization of the Mustang wrestling program and guided it to unprecedented heights. This past season on the mat, Cal Poly sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year, marking just the second time the program has accomplished that feat and the first since qualifying at least five for NCAAs from 2003 to 2007.
The Mustangs reached as high as No. 23 in the NWCA Coaches Poll during the 2023-24 season and were a top 25 nationally ranked tournament and dual team. Cal Poly also boasted six nationally ranked wrestlers for most of the season and had a remarkable showing at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships — one of the most prolific tournaments in the country — as a program-record three Mustangs placed in their respective weight classes and Cal Poly earned its second-highest team finish ever at the event.
Sioredas led the Mustangs to a top 10 ranking in his sixth year at the helm and during his seventh year in 2022-23 the Chesapeake, Virginia native helped Cal Poly achieve something truly monumental. He guided the team to an undefeated season (5-0) in the Pac-12 and the program’s first-ever Pac-12 dual meet title — an historic accomplishment and a feat unparalleled in the team's 38-year history within the Pac-12. His efforts and leadership earned him Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors.
Sioredas has produced five All-Americans over the last five years and has helped Cal Poly achieve a top 25 national ranking each of the last four seasons.
In addition to their success on the mat, Sioredas has helped the Mustangs excel at an incredibly high level in the classroom. In 2023, the team achieved a program-record team GPA and perfect APR score.
