SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior defender Emma Brown and senior forward Kate Reedy both earned a spot on the 11-player All-Big West Preseason Coaches Team released Monday.
This marks the first time since 2022 that the Cal Poly women’s soccer program has had multiple players named to the All-Big West Preseason Team.
As a team, the Mustangs — who advanced to their ninth Big West Championship match a year ago — were picked to finish second in the 11-team Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, along with Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach State, who fell to eventual conference tournament champion UC Irvine in the first round of the 2023 Big West Championship, was selected as the preseason favorite with 91 points and received six of the 11 first-place votes. Cal Poly and CSUF were right behind LBSU earning 86 points apiece, but the Titans received one more first place vote (3 to 2) than the Mustangs. UC Irvine (76), who has won the Big West tournament the last three seasons, was picked to finish fourth.
This is the third straight season Cal Poly has been picked second in the preseason poll. You can view the full All-Big West Preseason Coaches Team and poll HERE.
Emma Brown
Senior, Defender
This is the second straight season Brown has been named to the All-Big West Preseason Team. Last Tuesday, the stellar center back was one of 26 players in Division I tabbed as a “Defender to Watch” by the United Soccer Coaches ahead of the 2024 season.
Last year, Brown became the fifth player in program history and first since 2009 to be crowned the Big West Defensive Player of the Year, starting in all 21 matches, playing every minute in 19 of them and racking up 1,837 total minutes on the pitch, the most on the team among field players. Brown was selected to the All-Big West First Team for the second consecutive season as well and earned United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team honors, becoming just the fourth player in program history to receive three All-West Region selections.
Across three seasons, the Clovis, Calif. native has logged over 5,139 minutes on the pitch without receiving a card.

Kate Reedy
Senior, Forward
This is Reedy’s first time receiving preseason all-conference praise. Last year, Reedy was selected to the All-Big West Second Team for her play, securing conference honors for the first time. The Pleasanton, Calif. native led the entire Big West in 2023 in game-winning goals with three, burying game-winners at UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and Hawai’i. Her game winner at the Rainbow Wahine was scored just 32 seconds after the Mustangs buried an equalizer in the 85th minute, the second-shortest time in program history between an equalizing and go-ahead goal.
Reedy tied for the team lead in goals a year ago with five and was second on the team in points with 13. She was also third on the team in shots on goal (13) and fourth on the team in shots (22). Reedy has played in 54 matches during her Cal Poly career, tallying nine goals and three assists.
Cal Poly hosts Portland at 7 p.m. Thursday to open its 2024 season. It’s part of a three-match homestand to open the year for the Mustangs.
