SAN LUIS OBISPO – Closing his junior season in April with a second top-four finish at the Big West Championship, Cal Poly men's golf competitor Baron Szeto (left) will begin his senior year with a PGA Tour tournament on his resume with the Moraga, Calif., native qualifying for the July 18-21 Barracuda Championship. One state over, Cal Poly senior Jackson Parrish (right; Henderson, Nev.) captured the July 12-14 Nevada State Amateur Championship, firing an 11-under, 205 (68-69-68) at Boulder Creek Golf Club to win by four strokes and clinch a spot in the Aug. 12-18 U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National (Chaska, Minn.).
Szeto, Cal Poly's second leading returning scorer from last season with a 72.7 stroke average, shot an eight-under 63 at Monday's Barracuda Open qualifier to reach his first PGA event. Competing as an amateur at the Tahoe Mountain Club (Truckee, Calif.), Szeto tees off Thursday at 8:57 a.m., playing alongside Hayden Springer (United States) and Alejandro Tosti (Argentina).
The Barracuda Open, formerly known as the Reno-Tahoe Open, last featured a Cal Poly player in 2016 when Geoff Gonzalez competed. Other recent PGA Tour events featuring Cal Poly players include the 2022 British Open (Justin De Los Santos) and 2018 Shriners (Cole Nygren).
Parrish, who produced 73.3 stroke average last season, also qualified for last year's U.S. Amateur alongside teammate Joey Zambri.
