MEN'S 200 BACK PRELIMS RESULTS
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Cal Poly's Drew Huston wrapped up an incredible season and a strong showing at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Wednesday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
In the preliminaries of the men's 200-meter backstroke, Huston posted a time of 2:01.04 to place fifth in his heat and take 37th overall out of 63 American swimmers. He was .25 seconds off his personal best in the event. The top 16 times in prelims advanced to the 200 back semifinals Wednesday night.
On Sunday, Huston, who will be a junior on the Cal Poly swimming and diving team in the fall, opened his Olympic Trials debut by swimming a long course lifetime best in the 100 back prelims of 55.18 seconds. The time was 28th best in prelims and Huston captured third in his heat. Coming into the Trials, Huston was seeded 52nd out of over 75 swimmers that were entered in the event.
Huston's performance at the Trials officially capped off a sensational sophomore campaign for the Fox Island, Wash. native. This year, Huston shattered records in the 100- and 200-yard back, became Cal Poly's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion in the men's 200 back and swam the lead-off leg on Cal Poly's school record breaking 400 medley relay at the conference championships. He also swam the fourth-fastest 200 IM time in program history and the fifth-fastest 100 free.
Huston is the first current Cal Poly swimmer to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials since Sage Speak swam the women's 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 2016 Trials in Omaha.
