Mustangs Fall Short of Midweek Comeback in Santa Clara
5/7/2024 9:00:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Despite a hard-fought late push, Cal Poly (28-18, 17-7 BW) was stymied by Santa Clara's (22-23, 8-10 WCC) trio of runs in the fifth inning, losing to the Broncos 4-2.
Through the first four innings, the Mustangs only had one baserunner coming via Dylan Kordic being hit by a pitch in the second. Cal Poly finally collected its first of three hits in the fifth when Alejandro Garza broke up the growing Santa Clara no-hit bid.
Leadoff Broncos batter JonJon Berring homered to right-center just two pitches into his leadoff at-bat, which gave Santa Clara an early 1-0 lead.
The Broncos built on that momentum in the fifth inning after Cal Poly collected its first hit, doubling twice to opposite sides of the field before a second consecutive hit that yielded runs. In all, three total RBIs were tallied, which gave Santa Clara a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the latter half of the game.
The Mustangs immediately responded in the top of the sixth inning. Evan Cloyd got on base first with a lead-off single to center field, but his pinch-running replacement Liam MacDonald was later cut down at third despite Zach Daudet and Jake Steels both reaching base; Daudet by walk and Steels on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch advanced them both into scoring position before Ryan Stafford knocked Steels in during a ground out.
Solid bullpen pitching kept the Broncos at-bay as Cal Poly would continue the comeback attempt with a leadoff home run from Braxton Thomas in the eighth inning. Still on an unbelievable pace to kick off his college career, Thomas is now tied for second on the team with 4 home runs despite playing a paltry fraction of games and at-bats compared to the other Mustangs at the top of the list.
Despite having as much momentum as they could garner, the Mustangs were sat in order during the ninth inning, which ended the contest in a Santa Clara victory.
Cal Poly now comes back home for the first time since the UC Davis series in April, as the Mustangs take on Utah Tech in a four-game weekend series that includes a Saturday doubleheader; the final non-conference series and penultimate non-conference opponent of the season.
