Wright Dominates as Mustangs Breeze to Opening Win Over Utah Tech

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Jakob Wright continued to up his draft stock with yet another stellar performance as the lefty improved to 8-2 on the year while Cal Poly (29-18) easily dealt with the visiting Utah Tech Trailblazers (12-37) by a 7-2 margin.
Cal Poly pulled ahead early and never relented the lead as Wright was in the driver's seat all the way through a career-high 8 innings pitched. On top of notching another victory, Wright struck out 9 on the evening while allowing a paltry three hits and one earned run. Joe Yorke and Jake Steels helped lead on the offensive side, scattering a trio of hits each and tallying three combined runs between them.
Wright, edging closer towards the century strikeout mark on the season, sat down the first pair of Trailblazers on strikes to open game one. Steels built on the early momentum with a lead-off double in the bottom frame, advancing on a sac bunt and scoring on a sac fly in consecutive at-bats to get the 1-0 lead.
Wright continued tossing his dangerous stuff while striking out another batter in the top of the second. Cal Poly added to its lead with Ryan Fenn cranking his third home run of the year, putting the Mustangs up 2-0 already.
Utah Tech earned two walks to start the fourth inning and advanced both runners into scoring position before a fielder's choice batted in the Trailblazers' first run of the game, cutting their deficit in half at 2-1.
With Wright dealing another pair of strikeouts through two innings, Fenn walked to start the bottom of the fifth as Zach Daudet advanced him in the next at-bat. Fenn and Daudet stretched that hit into extra bases and put themselves in scoring position.
Aaron Casillas took advantage of the suicide squeeze opportunity to sacrifice bunt Fenn home. Steels then hit a well-placed ball just past Utah Tech's shortstop through the left side, which brought Daudet across the dish and improved Cal Poly's lead to 4-1 after five innings.
Joe Yorke then doubled to right center and finally made it home with two outs on the board when Fenn picked up his second hit and RBI of the day for a 5-1 advantage. In the seventh inning, Wright retained his control with a seventh strikeout while forcing a grounded double play to end the inning.
For the third straight inning and fifth of the game as a whole, the Mustangs put a run on the board. Three singles in a row with no outs eventually brought Casillas home with Ryan Stafford's team-leading 76th hit of the season, putting Cal Poly up 6-1 before a triple play ended the Mustang scoring threat.
In the eighth, Yorke hit against the Utah Tech shift into left field for his third knock of the day, advancing to second and third after Alejandro Garza backed Yorke up with his own single. Yorke made a gutsy move on a wild pitch that rolled all the way to the backstop, as the fan favorite first baseman crossed home for a 7-1 lead.
After Wright's fantastic performance, Ryan Baum only allowed one desperation run to the Trailblazers in sealing the 7-2 victory as he combined with Wright for four total hits given up. After earning a Friday night victory, the Mustangs head into tomorrow's doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. with a series lead.
