SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After a packed day of doubleheader baseball, Cal Poly (30-19) split results with Utah Tech (12-38) and continued to lead the series heading into Sunday's fourth and final contest. The Mustangs stood their ground in Saturday's first game by winning a tight 3-2 nail-biter, but the Trailblazers found an offensive footing in the nightcap affair and handed Cal Poly a 6-2 loss.
Before game three of the series in which Utah Tech won, the Mustangs were on a defensive roll after holding the opposition to just four hits apiece in the first two games. Also retaining an insane pace was Braxton Thomas who delivered his fifth home run of the year in just eleven games.
Ryan Fenn was a perfect 5-for-5 coming into game three but still managed to finish today's doubleheader with a total line of 7-for-9 and two runs scored. Tanner Sagouspe, following his closing effort in game one, took the conference lead with eight saves on the season.
During the defensive game one battle…Cal Poly came through with a 3-2 win led by Braxton Thomas' pair of RBIs with the assistance of a gutsy relief performance by Jake Torres who put in four scoreless innings for his second win of the year.
Despite scattering hits through the first few innings, and in a particularly lopsided margin with Cal Poly leading that column the entire time, both teams remained scoreless in a defensive clash. Through four innings, Brooks was doing his job to keep Utah Tech at bay with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Braxton Thomas finally broke the deadlock with a shot blasted 455 feet to deep right-center, admiring his fifth of the year that put him firmly second on the team despite playing a fraction of the games compared to other Mustangs.
After hitting several batters and walking a few as well, Brooks was relieved by Jake Torres. Although he struggled for control, the solid right-hander ended his afternoon allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings.
With the walks and bases loaded, the Trailblazers scored their first game-tying run on a fielder's choice before taking advantage of a balk from Torres that advanced their runner on third base across home plate for a 2-1 Utah Tech lead.
Thomas came up big again for the Mustangs to tie the game at 2-2 when the true freshman picked up his second RBI of the afternoon after hitting a ground out that brought Ryan Fenn home. With Joe Yorke on second later that inning, Alejandro Garza singled up the middle for the RBI and go-ahead run.
After a rocky start, Torres settled into place and pitched four complete scoreless innings for the win while allowing just three hits. Tanner Sagouspe closed out the 3-2 victory with his seventh save of the season.
During the doubleheader finale…Cal Poly got solid relief pitching from Charlie Royle but could not manage to keep up with Utah Tech's early pace as the Trailblazers scored all of their runs in the first five innings to take a 6-2 victory.
Utah Tech led off with a double, and despite getting forced to two outs quickly the Trailblazers nabbed a well-hit single through the left side for their first lead of the series at 1-0 after the opening frame.
The Mustangs had no issue answering with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Fenn led off with a single and Stafford walked to put the former in scoring position. Thomas grounded out to advance them both into scoring position before Joe Yorke's 2-RBI single up the middle gave Cal Poly a 2-1 lead.
A pair of doubles gave Utah Tech their game-tying second run in the top of the next inning as Volmerding was experiencing trouble consistently finding the strike zone. The Mustangs also gave up a passed ball, which allowed a runner from third to cross home place for a 3-2 Utah Tech lead.
The Trailblazers found a consistent burst of hits and scored for the third straight inning to open the game. With another double after a one-out walk, Utah Tech was able to take a definitive 5-2 lead with a 2-RBI single into deep left field.
Utah Tech's fifth double of the game in as many innings helped put another runner in scoring position who came in for a 6-2 Trailblazers lead after another single with two outs in the frame. Cal Poly's Charlie Royle worked hard to stop the bleeding and keep the team from leaking more runs through the middle innings.
Although Royle held Utah Tech to one earned run in his 6 1/3 innings of work, the offense was never able to recover and the Trailblazers picked up their first win of the series.
