SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman starting pitcher Griffin Naess continued his stellar rookie campaign Sunday, throwing seven scoreless innings and notch the victory to remain unbeaten on the season as the Mustangs cruised to an 8-1 win over Utah Tech Sunday in the series finale.
With the win, the Mustangs clinched the four-game series 3-1 to notch their third straight series in a row. They improved their record to 31-19 on the season after the non-conference victory Sunday.
Naess matched a season-high in strikeouts with seven while walking just one and giving up four hits over his seven scoreless innings. He is now a perfect 7-0 with a 3.02 ERA over 62.2 innings this season.
At the plate, Cal Poly produced 11 hits for its eight runs. Center fielder Zach Daudet was 2-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Ryan Fenn was 3-5 with a double and an RBI. For the series, Fenn was a scorching 10-14 at the plate to raise his average this year to .311. Shortstop Aaron Casillas recorded two RBIs on the day.
Meanwhile, catcher Ryan Stafford hit a double in the sixth to tied Cal Poly's all-time lead for career doubles. Stafford has 19 doubles this season and 56 for his career.
Cal Poly scored first in their half of the second. After loading the bases, Daudet hit a sac fly to straight away center that brought in Joe Yorke from third.
The Mustangs loaded the bases once again in the fourth, plating four runs. Utah Tech's pitcher balked to score Cal Poly's first run. Daudet then singled to left to bring in another run. Casillas put down a sac bunt to bring in a run. That was followed by an RBI double to left center by Fenn.
With two outs and a runner on first, Tate Shimao came in to pinch hit and hit an RBI double to the gap in right center to push the lead up to 6-0. Daudet then recorded his third RBI of the day with an RBI double down the left field line to make it 7-0. Casillas then hit a bloop single to center that brought in Daudet to score their eighth run of the game.
The Mustangs, who still sit in third in the Big West standings and are just three back of first, will play their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday when they head down south to face Pepperdine for a single game at 3 p.m. before returning to conference play over the weekend down at UC San Diego.
