SAN LUIS OBISPO – The reigning Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year honoree with Division II West Texas A&M, 6-6 guard Kieran Elliott became the Cal Poly men’s basketball program’s second offseason addition heading into the 2024-25 season on Tuesday morning.
Also named to the All-Lone Star Conference second team and Lone Star All-Freshman team last season, Elliott finished third in the West Texas A&M lineup with 12.4 points per game while leading the Buffaloes with 6.7 rebounds per outing. Starting all 35 games as a true freshman, Elliott finished in double-digit scoring figures 24 times, topped by a pair of career best 25-point performances. The Lubbock, Texas native also shot 59.4 (158-for-266) percent from the floor.
With Elliott in the lineup last year, West Texas A&M finished 30-5 overall and wrapped up the Lone Star West Division title with a 20-2 conference mark. A No. 1 seed in last year’s NCAA Division II Tournament, West Texas A&M captured the South Central Regional title and defeated North Georgia in the Elite Eight before being eliminated in the Final Four by eventual national champion Minnesota State.
In two matchups last season against Colorado Mesa – then led by current first-year Cal Poly head coach Mike DeGeorge – Elliott scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds during a December victory before a 10-point, eight-board effort during the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 helped West Texas A&M past Colorado Mesa.
Kieran is a winner and he’s going to make winning plays. From our game preparation when we played against him last December, our staff commented repeatedly how perfect he would be for our system. We’re so excited to have him join us at Cal Poly. His size, strength and athleticism make him a difficult matchup. When you combine that with his basketball acumen, he has the chance to be a very special player at Cal Poly. More importantly, he’s a great student and even better person that I can’t wait to work with.- Mike DeGeorge, Cal Poly Head Coach
Entering Cal Poly’s lineup as a sophomore, Elliott will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2024-25 season.
A three-time Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools 4A District 1 Most Valuable Player selection, four-time All-District honoree, two-time All-Texas selection and the 2023 4A Player of the Year at Trinity Christian (Lubbock, Texas), Elliott amassed more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during his high school career.
