Mustangs Improve Offensively but Lose to Tritons 12-7 in Saturday Brawl
5/18/2024 8:30:00 PM | Baseball
Both Jake Steels and Ryan Stafford walked to start the first inning, advancing themselves into scoring position on Ryan Fenn's sacrifice bunt. That put Joe Yorke in a RISP opportunity, which he converted on a ground out by bringing in Steels as Cal Poly drew first blood.
UC San Diego opened their half of the first with a walk and hit by pitch, which both base-runners also advanced on a failed pick-off attempt in the next at-bat. A sacrifice fly out to deep left field made for too difficult of a throw, allowing the Tritons to tie the game at one-all.
With the help of some daytime wind, UCSD found its first home run of the series out over the far right field numbers, scoring two runs and putting the Tritons up 3-1 early in the Saturday contest.
In the next inning, the Tritons increased the gap to 6-1 with another home run that fell into the wind tunnel around right-center. Just a few batters later, the Tritons placed another deep fly ball to the right-center gap that scored a seventh run.
For the 14th time this season, Steels was plunked to take first base and then advanced to second on a wild pitch shortly after. Stafford then singled to right-center, a popular location in game two, to bring Steels across home and lower the deficit to five runs.
A third wild pitch from UC San Diego's starter in the third inning allowed yet another Mustang to score, putting the score at 7-3 in favor of the Tritons but giving Cal Poly some momentum. However, the Tritons scored for a fourth consecutive inning and increased the lead to five runs again.
A third home run, extending the fifth inning and tallying runs for the Tritons. UCSD's lead increased to 10-3 as the Mustang pitchers struggled to consistently find outs. That same inning, UCSD added an 11th run on just as many hits in the game before Cal Poly got out of the jam.
The Mustangs finally found a response in the top of the sixth as Dylan Kordic and Zach Daudet got on base with singles before Aaron Casillas was able to score Kordic all the way from second with a well-hit RBI-single down the right field line. That brought Cal Poly within seven runs of UC San Diego.
Cal Poly continued its welling momentum in the sixth with a Steels RBI-single through the right side and Casillas scoring on a wild pitch in the next at-bat, which brought Cal Poly within five runs once more.
The Mustangs and Tritons traded runs between the sixth and seventh innings, taking the game to 12-7 in favor of the home team. Cal Poly could not find its footing again for a rallying comeback, losing the series to UC San Diego with the series finale set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
