Mustangs Fall 4-1 to UC San Diego’s Pitching in Game One
5/17/2024 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
LA JOLLA, Calif. – In game one of a pivotal series for Cal Poly (32-20, 17-8 BW), the Mustangs were unable to find consistent offense against UCSD's pitcher who tossed a four-hit complete game. The Tritons (29-22, 16-12 BW) scored all runs early to beat Cal Poly 4-1 in La Jolla.
Early on, Jakob Wright struggled to find control on his pitches but steadied after a second inning mound meeting with veteran catcher Ryan Stafford. Wright picked up his first strikeout of the game later in the inning, but the Tritons still managed to get a hold of several hits for the game's first two runs.
UC San Diego built on that early, unanswered lead by hitting through the third and short gap for another RBI-single.
Wright was already up to 50+ pitches through this point. Despite the jam, Wright got out of the inning without further damage by forcing soft contact.
With two outs on the board in the top of the fifth, Dylan Kordic doubled down the left field line and was brought in by Aaron Casillas singling to right field.
That cut the deficit to three as Ryan Baum took over on the mound and went to work stopping the Tritons.
Dylan Kordic bagged his second double of the game in the seventh inning.
Despite Baum pitching four complete, scoreless innings with one hit allowed, the Mustangs only collected a total of four hits themselves and fell 4-1 to UC San Diego and Anthony Eyanson's complete game.
Game two takes place tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. where Steven Brooks will get the start as Cal Poly looks to get back in the win column.
