Cal Poly Beats UCR and Clinches Fourth Consecutive Big West Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Continuing to climb the conference standings, the Cal Poly Mustangs defeated UC Riverside on the back of a three-run first inning to take another series while improving their record to 17-12 (8-3 BW).
This result turned into sole possession of second place in the conference after UC San Diego lost to Long Beach State, also putting the Mustangs one game behind UC Irvine for the top spot.
Steven Brooks picked up the win, taking his record to 3-4 while notching his third quality start in 2024. Brooks pitched six complete innings, allowing just two runs and striking out four Highlander batters.
The Mustangs began putting runs up from the get-go, setting the stage for another game of solid offensive production on Saturday evening. Ryan Stafford picked up his 11th double of the season, taking a hit into right field and scoring Steels.
Still in the top of the first inning, Ryan Fenn then followed that up by tripling the score with a two-run bomb, lengthening the Cal Poly lead to 3-0 after the opening frame.
Picking up a pair of RBIs between the 4th and 5th innings, UC Riverside managed to get back into the game, cutting the deficit to one run heading into the final few frames.
Cal Poly found a response in the seventh inning with yet another Stafford double, this time down the opposite line, sending Kemet Brown in for a two-run lead.
Fenn immediately flew out in the next at-bat but brought Steels across home, netting his third RBI of the day and giving the Mustangs a 5-2 lead.
Evan Cloyd continued to be Cal Poly's reliable designated hitter, doubling to bring Wyatt King in for a 6-2 lead in the 8th inning. This gap would be large enough to eventually stick for the win.
Torres relieved Brooks to start the 7th inning, playing his 17th game on the mound this season and adding onto his already 10th-most pitching appearances in the NCAA Division I coming into the night. The junior lefty K'd three Highlanders in as many innings for his second save.
After clinching their fourth consecutive Big West series to start the conference slate, the Mustangs finish up the series against UC Riverside on Sunday before returning home for five straight.
