Wright (5-2), who also struck out 11 against UC Santa Barbara a year ago, walked just one and gave up three runs, all in the fourth inning, and six hits over seven innings of work. He was helped by a pair of double plays, retired the side in order three times and faced the minimum three batters in an inning five times.
Ryan Baum threw two scoreless innings in a non-save situation with a pair of strikeouts on a chilly night with temperatures in the upper 40s by game's end.
With the win, Cal Poly improved to 16-12 for the season and remains 1 1/2 games behind UC Irvine in the Big West, tied for second place with UC San Diego, both 7-3. UC Riverside fell to 9-16 and 0-7.
Stafford produced a single, double and triple, scoring twice, while Casillas added two doubles and a run-scoring single, also scoring twice. Ryan Fenn knocked in three runs with a two-RBI double in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Jake Steels, Joe Yorke, Alejandro Garza and Dylan Kordic all had a pair of hits for the Mustangs – Kordic driving in two runs and Yorke and Garza one each.
Cal Poly scored at least one run in six of the nine innings, including three unearned runs in the second frame thanks to a dropped fly ball in the outfield and two more in the eighth. The Mustangs added single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth frames.
UC Riverside bunched together four of its eight hits in the fourth for its three runs.
The loss went to Highlander junior right-hander Julian Orozco (2-4) as he gave up six runs and nine hits over four innings. Noah Andrunas also pitched four frames, allowing three runs and five hits.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday night at 6 with junior right-hander Steven Brooks (2-4, 5.63 ERA) on the mound for the Mustangs.
