BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
LA QUINTA – Junior Baron Szeto and senior Joey Zambri (above) each climbed into the top five positions on the leaderboard, but the Cal Poly men's golf program – after turning in an even-par 288 during Monday afternoon's second round at the Big West Championship – remained in third place with 18 holes remaining at La Quinta Country Club.
Cal Poly entered Monday's second round trailing defending champion Long Beach State by just a single stroke before The Beach recorded a seven-under 281 to surge into first place with a two-day, nine-under 567. Cal State Fullerton, one over on Monday, dropped to second with a six-under 570.
With a one-under 575 through 36 holes, the Mustangs open Tuesday's third and final round eight shots behind Long Beach State and five back of Cal State Fullerton.
Individually, Szeto – who shared last year's Big West individual title – eagled the par-five 13th hole Monday and added three birdies to finish with a three-under 69. Improving one spot on the leaderboard, Szeto is fourth with a two-day, five-under 139 and just three shots back of overall co-leaders Tegan Andrews (Cal State Fullerton) and Rei Harashima (UC Irvine).
Also climbing one spot Monday and just a shot behind Szeto is Zambri, who enjoyed five birdies as part of a two-under 70. Zambri enters the final round five shots back of the lead with a three-under 141.
Junior Jackson Parrish produced two birdies Monday before finishing with a three-over 75. He sits in 13th position with a two-day, three-over 147.
Graduate student Ben Quick, with three birdies Monday, turned in a second successive two-over 74 and resides in 20th position with a four-over 148. Junior Parker Mapes, meanwhile, carded a 76 Monday and enters the final round with a two-round total of seven-over 151.
