Cal Poly Beats UC Davis Again and Claims Sixth Conference Series Win
4/27/2024 5:45:00 PM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly (24-16, 14-6 BW) continues holding its ground in the Big West by taking a sixth conference series during the 8-3 clinch over UC Davis (18-22, 5-12 BW). As of this game's end, the Mustangs retained 5th place in the conference standings.
Steven Brooks, like Wright the night before, sat down the lead off UC Davis batter on strikes. Brooks continued his masterful control this season, forcing a pair of fly outs to end the top of the first inning.
That earned Cal Poly a solid foothold to start the contest, but Ryan Fenn upped the ante by doubling down the left field line to put himself and Jake Steels in scoring position. An Aggie fielding error on Joe Yorke's ground ball scored them both for a 2-0 lead.
UC Davis loaded the bases with one out in the second inning due to a walk, single, and Cal Poly fielding error. However, Brooks did not falter and still managed to escape the inning without any further damage, throwing back-to-back punch outs.
Cam Hoiland kept the ball rolling in the third inning with a well-hit single to right that allowed him to reach third with a fielding error. Both Ryan Stafford and Joe Yorke were intentionally walked in between Ryan Fenn reaching on a fielder's choice, which loaded the bases.
Alejandro Garza made UC Davis pay for the double intentional walks by threading the needle with a ground ball between the first and second basemen, bringing both Fenn and Stafford around.
Dylan Kordic extended the third inning by nearly going yard, bouncing a deep right field fly off the wall to score yet another pair on his triple while lengthening the Mustang lead 6-0.
Last evening's extra innings hero, true freshman Braxton Thomas, extended the lead once again to complete Kordic's trip around the bases with his single into right center. Three straight hits yielded RBIs in that inning to take Cal Poly's lead to 7-0.
UC Davis scattered hits in the top of the sixth inning to pull one run back in a two-out hole, but that still left Cal Poly up by six runs. Holding the Aggies back into the seventh, Brooks was finally relieved by Jake Torres after allowing just five hits and one earned run while dealing nine strikeouts. Davis managed one more run in the next inning to bring the score to 7-2.
With a stand-up double in the bottom of the seventh, Stafford became just the sixth Mustang since 1995 (start of DI era) to pull off a 20-game hit streak.
Davis continued slowly crawling back into the game with another run scored in the eighth, but Jake Torres took the mound and quickly got the Mustangs out of the frame, protecting the lead once more.
Aaron Casillas flew out to right center in the bottom of the eighth, giving Cal Poly an insurance run when Shimao scored on a tag up. Josh Volmerding allowed a hit but closed the game out for Cal Poly to take game two and the series entirely.
