Cal Poly’s Four Doubles Net Game One Victory Over SDSU

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Returning to Baggett Stadium after the series win over Cal State Fullerton, the Mustangs strung together all their runs in the first four innings to defeat San Diego State 6-3 in the first battle of a two-game non-conference series.
Setting the tone for Cal Poly's 12th time this season allowing three runs or less, starter Josh Volmerding got out of a dangerous jam with two runners in scoring position during the first inning to halt SDSU's potential momentum.
Stafford walked to lead off the bottom of the first before forcing a fielding error when stealing second, which allowed him to easily take third. Ryan Fenn grounded out afterwards but still converted the RBI, which was Cal Poly's 11th game scoring in the first inning.
An RBI-double in the third inning tied the game for San Diego State, and a sac fly with two RISP gave them the lead at 2-1.
Heading to the bottom of the frame, a one-out double from Stafford to deep left was his eighth of the season, tying Fenn for the team-lead. The Mustangs strung together back-to-back doubles with Fenn taking the team-lead back over, batting in Stafford for the 2-2 tie.
Alejandro Garza got on the board as well with an RBI-single into center field, rounding Fenn from second all the way home to regain the game's lead at 3-2.
Cal Poly put up multiple runs in consecutive innings as Stafford tied Fenn's double total yet again with his second of the game and ninth of the season, bringing Dylan Kordic across home plate for the 4-2 lead.
Joe Yorke crushed a shot to deep right-center for a 2-RBI double, clearing a pair of runners on first and third while giving the Mustangs a four-run lead. That extra base knock put him at 156 career RBIs, three away from second place in Cal Poly history and five from breaking the program record.
The Aztecs finally found an answer again in the 7th inning after a triple and ground out for the subsequent RBI, lowering their deficit to three runs.
Despite the late Aztec scoring, Tanner Sagouspe confidently took the mound for his 13th relief appearance and eventual team-leading 4th save of the season, sitting the San Diego State side in order. Ryan Baum earned the win, throwing four complete innings while allowing just one run and two hits.
The Mustangs and Aztecs wrap up the back-to-back series on Wednesday evening with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m., the same time as game one.
