Mustangs Post Strong Sunday to Close El Macero Classic

EL MACERO – Graduate student Ben Quick (above) fired a four-under 68 during Sunday's final round of the UC Davis-hosted El Macero Classic as the Cal Poly men's golf program posted its lowest score of the event – by 13 shots – to complete its final regular season tournament.
Highlighted by Quick, four Mustangs produced their best rounds of the three-day tournament Sunday on the par-72, 7,127-yard El Macero Country Club. Thirteen shots better Sunday than during Saturday's second round, Quick's 68 included five birdies. He climbed 27 spots on the leaderboard to finish in 16th with a six-over 222 (73-81-68).
After recording successive 79s, junior Baron Szeto's final-round, one-over 73 comprised a pair of birdies. He finished in 61st with a 15-over 231 (79-79-73). Junior Jackson Parrish also enjoyed a one-over 73 Sunday to finish one shot behind Szeto with a three-day, 16-over 232 (81-78-73).
Graduate student Austin Liu also recorded his best round of the tournament Sunday with two birdies and a four-over 76. His three-day 237 (80-81-76) produced an 82nd-place showing. Senior Joey Zambri equally enjoyed a pair of birdies as part of a final-round 78 to end play alongside Liu in 82nd with a 237 (83-76-78).
As a program, Cal Poly's final-round 290 was a 14-shot improvement from Saturday. The Mustangs jumped three spots on the leaderboard to finish 15th.
Following a two-week break, Cal Poly opens action at the 2024 Big West Championships, scheduled for April 28-30 at the La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif. The Mustangs finished third in 2023.
