
No. 11 Mustangs Take Down Santa Clara, No. 13 FIU Saturday

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The 11th ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball team kept its strong start to the season going Saturday, going 2-0 on the day after beating Santa Clara, 5-0, before knocking off No. 13 Florida International University, 3-2 down in Long Beach.Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep, the No. 4 pair of Quinn Perry and Madison Nichols, and the No. 5 tandem of Julia Soeller and Abbey Reinard.
Against Santa Clara, Cal Poly won four of the five spots in straight sets. In addition to Ferch/Inskeep, Perry/Nichols, and Soeller/Reinard all picking up wins, the Mustangs' No. 1 pair of Ella Connor and Izzy Martinez as well as the No. 3 duo of Piper Naess and Logan Walter also collected wins.
The against No. 13 FIU, it was tight start to finish. Ferch and Inskeep got things started with a straight sets win at the No. 2 spot to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. That lead went up to 2-0 after Perry and Nichols won their match at the No. 4 spot also in straight sets.
After FIU won at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to tie the duel up 2-2, it all came down to the No. 5 spot. Soeller and Reinard answered the call as they bounced back from losing the first set to win the next two 21-19, 15-8 and clinch the victory for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will look to keep things rolling Sunday when facing No. 18 Stetson at 9 a.m. and Southern Mississippi at 1 p.m.
The wins now move the Mustangs to three straight victories and improves their record to 8-2 this season.
