Biggest Single-Inning Against Division I Opponent Fuels 19-2 Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — All nine Cal Poly batters in the starting lineup hit RBIs as the Mustangs routed Ohio State 19-2 in their fourth straight win and largest number of runs scored since 2016. A sixth inning explosion of 14 runs, in which the Mustangs nearly ran through their lineup twice, marks Cal Poly's biggest single-inning total against a Division I opponent in program history.
Team strikeouts leader Steven Brooks earned a quality start against the Buckeyes in his first win of 2024. Brooks held Ohio State to minimal gains through six innings of work, tossing five strikeouts while allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
Through the final three innings, the bullpen added to the fantastic team pitching performance with Caden Pearlman, Ethan Marmie, and Christopher Downs combining for three strikeouts and one hit allowed through a triplet of shutout frames.
Jake Steels moved into the conference lead for batting average (.438) and co-lead for hits (21) after his 3-for-4, 2 RBIs effort. Ryan Stafford, Joe Yorke, Alejandro Garza, and Dylan Kordic all joined Steels in tallying multiple hits against the Buckeyes as the Mustangs totaled 21 on the afternoon.
After a tightly contested Friday affair, the Mustangs and Buckeyes looked set for another close battle in game two when the foes traded one run each in the first and second innings. Garza picked up the Mustangs' first score in inning two after a throwing error to second base.
In the bottom of the third, Cal Poly strung together three hits in a four-batter span to increase the lead. Ryan Fenn singled to left, which rounded Steels from second. Shortly after Fenn took second base himself on a successful steal attempt, Garza unleashed a single to center field to bat both Stafford and Fenn in.
Ohio State finally responded again with a double to score one run in an otherwise quiet fifth inning before the floodgates opened up in the bottom of the sixth.
Cal Poly put together its finest inning against a Division I opponent in program history, tallying nine hits for fourteen runs while running through the lineup almost two complete times. Joe Yorke, who has gotten hot in the last few games, cleaned up with the bases juiced after nearly hitting the Mustangs' first home run of the year that turned into a ground rule double, automatically scoring the first two runs of the sixth inning.
From there, the scoring run seemed endless as Cal Poly strung together hit-after-hit. On top of Yorke's double, Garza singled for an RBI, Casey Murray Jr. hit a pair just two batters later, Steels also collected two RBIs on a single through the left side, Stafford copied Steels with his own RBI through the left, Yorke hit another RBI right to the pitcher, Kordic doubled to left center for another pair, and Casillas singled to right field for his own RBI. Two runs were also scored that inning on pitching mishaps.
To rub salt on the wound, Evan Cloyd pinch hit for Yorke in the next inning and put the Mustangs up by 17 with a single to center field.
After a record-setting game, the Mustangs will now look to replicate their recent offensive breakout with two more games in the Ohio State series, the next being Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before the fourth and final contest on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
