Mustangs Fall Just Short of Fifth Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Baseball has been on a roll since the end of the series against Utah, but coming off a record-setting win last night the Mustangs fought hard and fell 5-3 to an early scoring run from Ohio State.
The Mustangs (6-8) were forced to battle from behind early after two innings of quick offensive work for the Buckeyes. They kicked off the opening frame with three straight hits to score the first run on a center field single before adding an RBI double two batters later. Ohio State also capitalized on a wild pitch to score yet another run, putting the Buckeyes up 3-0 after the first half inning.
Alejandro Garza continued his impressive hitting from the previous day with a RBI single answer to Ohio State in the bottom of the frame. The standout freshman ended the day 2-for-4 with the one RBI.
Another Ohio State extra hit helped get the Buckeyes ahead 5-1 through the next two innings before Cal Poly was finally able to get back on the board in the bottom of the fourth with Evan Cloyd's own RBI double that batted in Dylan Kordic.
Shutdown bullpen work allowed the Mustangs an opportunity back into the game. After Ryan Baum was forced out in the second inning, Josh Volmerding took the mound in relief and got the Mustangs back on the right foot with four innings allowing just three hits and no runs.
In the final seven shutout innings, Volmerding was assisted by Caden Pearlman and Cam Hoiland who combined for three strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Ryan Stafford gave the Cal Poly fans something to cheer about in the seventh inning as he cut the deficit to two runs with the team's first home run of the year.
Ohio State's bullpen was able to come out on top of the seven-inning pitcher's duel in the end. Despite multiple innings of baserunners, the Mustangs were unable to bring more than one more run across home plate, narrowly missing out on their fifth straight victory.
One final game on Monday will decide whether the Mustangs come out of the series with a win or tie before they start up the conference slate next weekend.
