Naess and Sagouspe Combine for One-Hitter in Doubleheader Sweep of Titans

FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite a game one loss, the Cal Poly baseball program regrouped and completely overturned the result with a pair of definitive team victories, winning game two 5-2 and the series finale 6-0. The Mustangs swept the all-important Friday doubleheader while taking their fourth straight series.
The 6-0 series-clincher was highlighted by an incredible and historic performance from true freshman Griffin Naess who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before it was broken up, causing Tanner Sagouspe to close out Cal Poly's first one-hit pitching performance since 2005.
During Friday's opening 5-2 win, the Mustangs put together an offensive run in the third and fourth innings to complete a comeback win after going down early to a Fullerton home run in the second frame.
After the quick score from the Titans, starter Jakob Wright found his stride and shut down Cal State Fullerton at every turn going forward. Allowing his lowest number of runs in over a month, Wright enjoyed a stretch from the 4th-6th innings where he sat down 8 consecutive Titan batters.
Ryan Stafford and Joe Yorke got the Cal Poly offense going in the third inning by both singling through the right side. Yorke's 2 RBIs marked his career 152nd and 153rd, inching closer to the program record of 160.
Jake Steels continued his consistent and incredible production, smacking an RBI-single to left-center after Aaron Casillas hit his own RBI-double, making it a 5-1 Mustang lead. With that, Steels extended his on-base streak to 24 games.
Fullerton picked up one final consolation run in the eighth, but the Mustangs never looked back after the 5-run scoring glut. Jake Torres closed out the game for Wright, pitching three complete innings of work while allowing just three hits as Wright notched his fourth win of the season.
In Cal Poly's defensively dominant 6-0 series winner, Griffin Naess was pitching like a man possessed on the mound, putting an exclamation mark on an already exciting day for the Mustangs by combining with Tanner Sagouspe to toss the program's first one-hitter in almost two decades.
Naess opened up the game with three straight 1-2-3 frames, striking out four in the process. The true freshman never slowed down one bit, with the only Titan baserunners through eight innings coming via hit-by-pitches.
Ryan Fenn and Alejandro Garza both hit RBIs in the third inning, giving the Mustangs an early lead to work off. Yorke grabbed his third RBI of the doubleheader with a fielder's choice RBI two innings later, extending the Cal Poly lead to 3-0.
Yorke's score moved his career RBIs mark to 154, just five shy of second all-time in Cal Poly's record books and seven away from breaking the program record.
The Mustangs continued rolling again, truly putting the game away, with a Steels RBI-single in the sixth. Steels extended his one-base streak once again, making it 25-straight and the entire season thus far.
Naess' historic performance came to a head as Cal Poly broke into the eighth inning and the right hander continued sitting batters one-after-another. Despite the no-hitter being broken up, Naess walked off the field to a standing ovation from the Fullerton fanbase and most importantly his own teammates.
Sagouspe did justice to Naess' efforts without allowing a single hit, bringing the one-hitter to a close and sealing the series-clinching victory. This also moved Naess to an undefeated 4-0 record on the season.
The Mustangs now come back home to defend Baggett Stadium against San Diego State, coming off a 7 inning no-hitter of their own, in a two-game midweek series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following that, Cal Poly is right back on the road in-conference against UC Riverside.
