Cal Poly Drops Game One to Early Cal State Fullerton Push
3/28/2024 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
FULLERTON, Calif. – After upsetting No. 25 UC Santa Barbara at home last weekend in a 2-1 series victory, the Mustangs were looking to stay on the winning track coming into Fullerton. Cal Poly was outpaced early by Cal State Fullerton's 5-runs in the first three innings, dropping game one by an 8-2 score.
Cal State Fullerton forced Steven Brooks out in the fourth innings, but Caden Pearlman and Evan Tomlinson pitched well enough through the remainder of the game, combining to allow only 5 hits.
Despite some help from the bullpen, missed Mustang scoring opportunities down the stretch allowed the Titans to retain their lead through the final six innings of the Thursday night contest.
The opening at-bats for CSF were Cal Poly's biggest test early in the game as the Titans doubled and homered in back-to-back plate appearances for a 3-0 lead.
After a pair of three-up, three-down frames for each side, the Mustangs finally responded in the third inning with Ryan Stafford second home run of the season with a two run shot that scored Jake Steels, cutting the deficit to just one.
Ryan Fenn also singled to center field in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to 18 games, which now ranks in the top-10 longest hitting streak for Cal Poly's Division I history.
Cal State Fullerton put up another pair of runs in the bottom of that same inning to match the previous lead. Pearlman, for the Mustangs, halted the Titans on offense for a while, allowing Cal Poly's bats a few innings to get going again. However, following the third inning, Cal Poly managed just three hits through the final six frames.
A few schedule changes earlier in the week sees the series finale come early, as the Titans and Mustangs will play a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch of the opening game set for 4:00 pm.
